Adult carpet beetles enter homes through open windows and doors, attracted to pollen and flowers. They also hitchhike in on cut flowers, secondhand furniture, and clothing. Bird nests in eaves and attics are a major source — the beetles feed on feathers and dead insects in nests, then migrate into the home.
Carpet beetle larvae leave irregular holes and shed bristly skins (exuviae). Clothes moth larvae leave silky webbing or cases near feeding sites. Adult carpet beetles are small, round, and patterned — adult clothes moths are narrow and tan. Both cause similar fabric damage, but the treatment approach differs.
DIY treatments rarely eliminate carpet beetle infestations because larvae hide deep in carpet fibers, wall voids, and stored items that are difficult to reach. Over-the-counter sprays kill exposed adults but miss larvae. Professional treatment with residual insecticides and a thorough inspection is needed for complete elimination.
