Color: Light brown to tan with two dark parallel stripes behind the head

Color: Very dark brown to black, shiny
Wings: Males have short wings; females are nearly wingless. Neither flies.

Color: Males: reddish-brown with cream-colored markings on wings. Females: dark brown to black with cream-colored markings.
Wings: Males have full wings and can fly. Females have short wings.

Signs You Have a Cockroach Infestation
Seeing roaches during the day
Daytime sightings indicate a large, overcrowded population — especially for German cockroaches, which are strictly nocturnal.
Droppings
German roach droppings look like black pepper or coffee grounds. American roach droppings are larger, cylindrical with ridged sides.
Egg cases (oothecae)
Brown, purse-shaped egg cases found behind appliances, in cabinets, or in cracks. Each contains 14–40 eggs depending on species.
Musty odor
Large infestations produce a distinctive musty, oily odor from pheromones and fecal matter. Strongest in enclosed spaces like cabinets.
Smear marks
Dark, irregular smear marks along walls and surfaces where roaches travel regularly, especially in moist areas.

The American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) is the most common large roach in Arizona homes, entering through drains and foundation gaps from the sewer system. The German cockroach is the most common small roach and the most difficult to eliminate due to its rapid reproduction rate and tendency to develop pesticide resistance. The Turkestan cockroach has become increasingly common in the Phoenix metro over the past two decades.
